Many witnessed Sunday night the horrific performance Miley Cyrus gave at the MTV VMAs. News and social media has been blowing up with comments on how this young performer is creating a bad image for kids to look up to. As the former star of Hannah Montana, Cyrus has an audience that ranges from pre-teen to young adults. Most kids have the access to view her performance on the Internet or on the repeated viewing of the award show on MTV.
Unfortunately, her publicist or whoever takes care of her branding did not really think about her performance ruining her name. Of course she is growing up and growing out of her Disney name, but that should not mean dressing and dancing provocatively on stage with millions of viewers.
We as a firm are aware of audiences when we come up with strategies for clients. We think about who will see the products, what different types of people will think and if anyone could possibly be offended. The display Cyrus put on surely offended mothers, religious people and women for that matter. That would not be a celebrity we would want representing one of our clients.
Luckily, there are celebrities out there who really care about youth today and how they portray themselves. Recently, at the Teen Choice Awards, Ashton Kutcher won an award and gave an acceptance speech about what he has learned about success. He speaks on working hard, being sexy by being smart and living life.
Kutcher’s speech is one that should be shared throughout schools and maybe even offices. We are never too old to learn that we have to work hard, be smart and create a life for ourselves. Yes, I am sure that motivational speakers discuss this topic all the time, but when it comes from a celebrity who people may think just has a lot of money, the value means much more. Kutcher is a famous actor who has been working for a very long time and has made America laugh with many of his films. It is refreshing to see him speak truth and try to teach our youth something about life.
We wanted to compare these two award scenarios because obviously, in the media sex sells. With the performance of Miley taking over the Internet, it is important that the public hear the words Ashton has to say about the things he has learned in life. So maybe after reading this and watching Kutcher’s speech, share it far and wide on social media and hopefully his view on “sexy” will overcome Miley’s.
